Targeting the Trinamool Congress (TMC) over the alleged gherao of seven judicial officers in West Bengal’s Malda district during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj on Thursday (April 2, 2026) said the incident amounted to “crushing of democracy”.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha, Ms. Swaraj said a “very serious incident” had occurred on Wednesday (April 1, 2026) in which judicial officers, including women officials, were confined for several hours in Malda by persons allegedly associated with the ruling TMC.

She urged Parliament to send a strong message and called upon the Union government to ensure that “such anarchy is not tolerated” in West Bengal.

Ms. Swaraj also maintained that the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls was “not a political exercise but a constitutional necessity”.

The Supreme Court on Thursday strongly criticised the West Bengal administration over its alleged inaction in connection with the incident.

In its observations, the court said the episode indicated a “complete failure of the State administration” and remarked that West Bengal appeared to be the “most polarised State”.
