Call for greater police preparedness to tackle cybercrime

Throwing light on the growing challenges posed by cybercrime and organised networks, speakers at Police Flag Day celebrations in Kalaburagi and Ballari on Thursday called for greater preparedness, technological adoption and enhanced welfare measures for police personnel.

In Kalaburagi, retired Assistant Commissioner of Police Mohammed Ismail Sharif said that the Police Department must effectively utilise technology to combat rising cyber fraud and drug-related crimes.

Addressing a gathering after receiving the ceremonial salute at the Armed Police Parade Grounds, he noted that Karnataka ranks second in the country in cybercrime cases, involving fraud worth thousands of crores, which is a matter of serious concern.

He stressed the need for initiatives such as “Mane Manege Police” (police outreach at every household) for accurate data collection and maintenance of “who is who” record to track offenders. He also advised police personnel to focus on financial security and health.

Police Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa, who presided over the function, underlined the importance of people-friendly policing to build public trust.

He said that 153 personnel will be honoured with the Chief Minister’s Gold Medal and DGP Commendation Disc, including five from the district.

Welfare measures such as educational assistance and health schemes for personnel were highlighted, along with the need for term insurance coverage.

Superintendent of Police Addur Srinivasulu said that the day is observed to mark the enactment of the Karnataka State Police Act on April 2, 1965 and it has been celebrated jointly as Police Flag Day and Police Welfare Day since 1984.

As part of the programme, scholarships ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹50,000 were distributed to children of police personnel pursuing professional courses, while medical assistance was extended to retired staff.

A cheque for ₹9 lakh from funds collected voluntarily by officers and staff was handed over to the family of a deceased policeman to support their livelihood and children’s education.

In Ballari, retired Assistant Sub-Inspector Srinivasalu M., the chief guest, said that guidance from senior officers and institutional support helped him overcome challenging situations during service, bringing satisfaction in his career.

He urged the department to ensure timely delivery of benefits to retired personnel and suggested establishing a dedicated help desk to assist families of deceased staff with employment and documentation.

Additional Superintendent of Police S. Naveenkumar said that the department gives priority to the welfare of serving and retired personnel, including financial assistance and medical support.

Funds collected on the occasion will be shared between State and Central welfare funds for police personnel.

Police officials highlighted that the force works under challenging conditions every day to safeguard society and called for continued public cooperation to uphold the dignity and effectiveness of the department.

Parades by various police contingents, including women personnel, marked the celebrations at both places, with senior officers, retired personnel and members of the public in attendance.
