Kerala Assembly polls: UDF candidate in Kanhangad faces complaint for alleged religious appeal for votes

A complaint has been lodged against United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate Shaiji Ottappally in the Kanhangad Assembly constituency in Kasaragod, Kerala, alleging that he sought votes by invoking religion during the ongoing election campaign.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred on March 22 when the candidate visited the Rajapuram Holy Family Forane Church. It is alleged that while canvassing for votes, he made references to religion and community, in violation of the Model Code of Conduct. The complainant also claimed that visuals related to the incident are circulating on social media.

The complaint was submitted to the Returning Officer by V.K. Rajan, chief agent of Left Democratic Front (LDF) candidate Govindan Palliakkapil. The petition alleges a breach of the Model Code of Conduct and seeks an inquiry into the matter. Following the complaint, election authorities have sought a report on the incident. Further action is expected after the completion of the inquiry.

Attempts to contact the UDF candidate for a response were unsuccessful and no official reaction has been received so far.
