Shiv Sena State president Siddalinga Swami criticised councillors and officials of the Kalaburagi City Corporation for passing a condolence resolution for Iran’s dead supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during the corporation’s budget meeting on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference here on Wednesday, Mr Siddalinga Swami questioned the need to pay tribute to a foreign leader in a civic body meeting.

He termed the move inappropriate and selective and asked why the corporation did not organise condolence meetings in other cases, including the Pahalgam attack.

He said that the resolution was moved by Congress councillor Syeda Noor Fatima who is said to have described Khamenei’s death as “murder of humanity”. Siddalinga Swami questioned the basis of the statement.

Referring to human rights concerns in Iran, especially regarding the treatment of women, the religious leader said that elected representatives should be careful about individuals they choose to praise.

He said that Khamenei’s tenure was marked by brutality and violence.

He also slammed BJP councillors present at the meeting for not objecting to the resolution and questioned why the City Corporation Commissioner did not intervene.

Demanding legal action against those who moved and supported the resolution, Siddalinga Swami urged the authorities to ensure that civic body discussions remain focused on local issues.
