Capt. Brijesh Chowta, MP for Dakshina Kannada, met Union Minister of Food Processing Industries Chirag Paswan in Delhi on Wednesday and urged him to do the needful for revising the permissible moisture content for arecanut to about 11%, from the present 7%, in line with comparable agricultural commodities. He highlighted the challenges arising from the current moisture content norms of 7 % prescribed under FSSAI regulations. He pointed out that under prevailing field conditions, especially in humid and coastal regions, arecanut is predominantly sun-dried, making it extremely difficult for farmers to achieve moisture levels below 11%.
