Election flying squad officials seized unaccounted cash totalling ₹1.55 crore in two separate incidents at Light House and Perambur railway station earlier this week.

In an incident on Tuesday (March 31, 2026), a flying squad team intercepted a Cash Management System (CMS) vehicle near Light House around 5 p.m. Upon inspection, officials discovered ₹1.47 crore in the vehicle. The occupants claimed the money was being transported for replenishing ATM kiosks assigned to them.

Officials, however, seized both the vehicle and the cash, which were later secured at the Marina police station. Election authorities and Income Tax officials of the Chepauk Assembly constituency were alerted. Officials said the cash would be released only after proper verification of documents to establish its source and purpose.

In another incident on Monday (March 30), Railway Protection Force personnel seized ₹8.39 lakh from a passenger during a check at Perambur railway station. The passenger, identified as Noor Mohammad, 42, from Ennore, told officials he worked for a firm handling wholesale biryani order and was carrying the money to hand it over to shop owners.

The seized amount was later handed over to the Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar election flying squad official, James Samuel, and subsequently deposited in the city treasury following due procedure.
