Doctors at Ravi American Cancer Care provided a new lease of life to a 21-year-old man from the city who had consumed rat poison, reportedly due to mental distress, and was in a life-threatening situation. Addressing the media in Vijayawada on Tuesday, gastroenterologist and hepatologist Praneeth Movva said the youngster who consumed rat poison on March 16 had his liver severely affected. The doctors put him on continuous plasma exchange therapy through a ‘C-Plex’ machine, an advanced medical method used to remove toxic substances from the blood. This procedure involves replacing the plasma in the patient’s blood, he explained. The doctors said if proper treatment is given to a person within few hours of consuming rat poison, complications can be avoided, as effective treatment methods are available.
