Muthusamy, DMK candidate for the Erode (West) Assembly constituency and a Minister, launched his campaign for the April 23 Assembly election here on March 30, 2026 (Monday). The constituency was formed in 2008 following the bifurcation of the erstwhile Erode Assembly constituency, with Erode (East) being the other constituency. In 2011, K.V. Ramalingam of the AIADMK defeated M. Yuvaraja of the Indian National Congress. He retained the seat in 2016, defeating Mr. Muthusamy by a margin of 4,906 votes. However, in 2021, Mr. Muthusamy won the seat, defeating Mr. Ramalingam by a margin of 22,089 votes. On Monday, Mr. Muthusamy, along with Erode MP K.E. Prakash, kickstarted his campaign at Keel Thindal and Mel Thindal. He distributed pamphlets highlighting the achievements of the government over the past five years and assured the public that their grievances would be addressed. V.C. Chandhirakumar, MLA from Erode (East), was not present. Party sources said he was upset over the decision to allot the seat to the Congress.
