A police inspector and two of his associates allegedly assaulted a man at Uduvare near Goruru in Hassan taluk on January 6 evening.

Shashidhar, a resident of Karlekoplu near Kattaya in Hassan taluk, who was seriously injured in the incident, is undergoing treatment at Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences.

The Goruru police have registered a complaint based on Mr. Shashidhar’s statement. He alleged that Shiva Kumar, a police inspector in Shivamogga, and two associates, stopped him at Uduvare and hit him with an iron rod. He suffered serious injuries on his leg and head. Locals took him to the hospital.

Mr. Shashidhar said he had known Kumar since he worked in Hassan. Over the last seven to eight years, both engaged in financial deals. The inspector had given him ₹50 lakh to purchase a property in his (Shashidhar’s) name, asking him to be his benami. However, recently, differences had risen between them over finances.

When The Hindu contacted Hassan Superintendent of Police Shubhanwita, the officer said that the police had booked a case against Kumar. “We are investigating the case and actively working to arrest the accused, who are absconding,” she said.
