The Tamil Nadu Milk Producer’s Welfare Association (TNMPWA) has demanded an assurance from the political parties on production cost-based procurement price for milk.

Over 30 lakh farmers in the State are involved in producing three crore litres of milk every day, as per the government data. Of this, 35 lakh litres is supplied to Aavin milk cooperative societies and 85 lakh litres to the private societies. The milk vendors procure 1.50 crore litres of milk from milk producers.

TNMPWA general secretary M.G. Rajendran said that due to increase in prices of concentrated cattle feed and labour, the production cost of milk is touching nearly ₹61. But Aavin is procuring at ₹38, and private dairies at ₹45. If this situation continues, milk producers will move away from cattle rearing and milk production. It will also affect the milk self-sufficiency of Tamil Nadu and force the government to source milk from other States. The milk producers expect an announcement of a production cost-based milk procurement price by the political parties.

“We demand the political parties to look into our demand and milk producers will support the party that gives this assurance in this 2026 Assembly elections,” Mr. Rajendran added.
