Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and MLC Somu Veerraju has criticised YSRCP president and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for “conspiring against Amaravati and pursuing anarchic policies.”

In a statement of Sunday, Mr. Veerraju hailed the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly’s resolution reaffirming Amaravati as the State’s sole capital as a historic decision.

Describing it as a landmark moment, Mr. Veerraju said it marked a decisive victory over the “misrule of the previous government.” He alleged that Amaravati had suffered systematic neglect and injustice over the past five years.

Mr. Veerraju accused Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy of betraying public trust. Ahead of the 2019 elections, Mr. Jagan Mohan Reddy had built a residence in Amaravati and assured people that it would remain the capital. “After coming to power, he went back on his word and deceived the very people who elected him,” the BJP leader said.

The previous administration had deliberately stalled Amaravati’s development. Even basic infrastructure such as roads and water supply to educational institutions was neglected, he alleged. The lack of support to nationally and internationally reputed institutions in Amaravati had damaged the State’s reputation among students from across the country, he said.

Criticising the three-capital proposal of the YSRCP government, Mr. Veerraju described it as a “diversionary tactic” that led to inaction. While Visakhapatnam was projected as an economic capital, he alleged that no tangible development had taken place either there or in Kurnool for public benefit.

The previous government’s approach created an impression that the State did not require a capital at all, which ultimately led to public rejection.

Mr.Veerraju asked the YSRCP to acknowledge its past mistakes and extend support to the Assembly resolution on the capital. The Centre would fully support the resolution in the interest of the State, he said.

Mr. Veerraju said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, the coalition government was committed to developing Amaravati into a national capital.
