Photo credit: X/@office_mufti Kashmir chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, also head of the amalgam of religious groups Muttahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), on Friday (March 27, 2026) met Iranian Ambassador Dr. Mohammad Fathali in New Delhi and expressed condolences “on the martyrdom of Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his family members and other leadership”. “People of J&K have a lot of pain in their hearts over the oppression and injustice meted out to Iran, Lebanon, Palestine. People peacefully came out in Kashmir to protest against it. People are even now collecting money. Kashmir has a historical connection with Iran, on account of culture, faith,” said the Mirwaiz. The Mirwaiz was joined by senior religious leaders, including Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, Aga Syed Hassan Al-Mosvi, Aga Syed Hadi Al-Mosvi, and Aga Syed Mujtaba, during his visit to the Iranian embassy. He also recorded “deep sense of grief and sorrow in the condolence book at the embassy” and paid “rich tributes on behalf of the people of J&K to Khamenei”. A spokesperson of the MMU said the delegation led by the Mirwaiz “conveyed heartfelt condolences on the martyrdom of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his family members and other leadership”. “The delegation expressed deep solidarity with the people of Iran in their hour of invasion and hardship,” said the spokesperson. The delegation, according to the spokesperson, also expressed “serious concern and condemned the ongoing war imposed on Iran by Israel and the United States”. The Mirwaiz, the spokesperson said, hoped that “diplomatic efforts will prevail to bring an end to this aggression, restoring peace and stability”. Meanwhile, the delegation highlighted the deep-rooted cultural, historical, and religious ties between Kashmir and Iran. “Kashmir has long been referred to as “Iran-e-Sagheer” (Little Iran), reflecting the enduring bonds between the two peoples,” the spokesperson said.
