Ragesh Giving a fillip to tourism in the Beypore Assembly constituency, the Beypore Destination Management Committee (DMC), a body aimed at planning and coordinating tourism activities, has commenced operations. Officials said the primary mandate of the DMC, constituted at the government level, was to implement tourism development in a scientific manner. Besides, the DMC will help give tourism destinations wider publicity at the national and international levels. Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas, who is also the local MLA, is the chairperson of the DMC. Chairing the first meeting of the committee earlier this week, Mr. Riyas said plans would be drawn up and implemented to ensure greater publicity for tourism destinations in the Beypore constituency so as to attract State and national attention. Top priority will be given to maintaining cleanliness, one of the most crucial aspects of tourism centres. “Special activities will be organised, with the cooperation of educational institutions in the respective areas, to ensure cleanliness at tourism centres in the constituency. Awareness programmes and cleanliness campaigns involving students will also be conducted under the aegis of the DMC,” Mr. Riyas said. The meeting discussed the importance of ensuring coordination among various departments and the active participation of local self-government institutions in tourism development. It was decided to strengthen the activities of the DMC to develop Beypore into a responsible and sustainable major tourism destination. Revenue generated from tourism centres will be routed to the DMC. This, according to officials, will help in swiftly formulating and implementing development activities. It will also ensure proper maintenance of basic infrastructure at tourist destinations, including roads, toilets, and signboards. Scientific waste management will also be ensured. DMC executive officer and District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) secretary T. Nikhil Das, DMC vice chairperson O. Bhakthavalsalan and others attended the meeting.
