This will be Mr. Owaisi’s first election-related visit to the State, which is going to the polls in a single phase on April 9. “He agreed to campaign for our party when my son Abdur Rahman went to meet him in Delhi. We are organising at least eight campaign programmes during his visit to the State in the first week of April,” Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal, the AIUDF chief, told The Hindu on Friday (March 27, 2026). The AIUDF is contesting 30 of Assam’s 126 Assembly seats, mostly in Muslim-dominated areas. Mr. Owaisi is scheduled to campaign for Mr. Ajmal, who is contesting the Binnakandi constituency. AIMIM’s broader outreach in the eastern part of the country is seen as an effort to consolidate minority votes in key constituencies of Assam and West Bengal. Muslims, mostly Bengali-speaking, have been a deciding factor in at least 35 constituencies in Assam before the 2023 delimitation exercise. For the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidates, the campaign by national leaders will begin with Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday (March 28, 2026) followed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi a few days later. Mr. Shah is scheduled to participate in a roadshow for the BJP’s Guwahati Central candidate Vijay Gupta. He will also campaign for Ministers Ashok Singhal and Chandra Mohan Patowary, contesting the Dhekiajuli and Tihu seats, respectively.
