Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan visited the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) in Mysuru on Thursday and held discussions with the staff on the strengthening of ‘Bharatiya’ languages.

Mr. Pradhan, in a message posted on X, said he held substantive discussions with the team at the CIIL in Mysuru on its “evolving mandate to advance the development of Bharatiya languages through research, innovation and collaborative frameworks”.

“The dialogue centred on widening the CIIL’s engagement beyond the 22 Scheduled Languages to reflect India’s full linguistic diversity while deepening work in core linguistics and strengthening linkages with language technologies and Indian Knowledge Traditions.”

He said a strong emphasis was placed on “decolonisation” of language frameworks and knowledge systems alongside a shift towards more indigenous perspectives in linguistic development.

Mr. Pradhan also visited the exhibition at the CIIL and witnessed the showcase of India’s linguistic heritage. “The thoughtfully-curated displays, including NCERT’s Primer Series, Classical Language Series and Bharatiya Bhasha Jyoti Series, highlight the dedicated efforts towards the preservation, promotion and dissemination of Indian languages,” he said on X.

Earlier in the day, Mr. Pradhan also visited Suttur Mutt and met Shivarathri Deshikendra Swami.
