Highlighting that the nomadic and semi-nomadic communities face difficulties to seek benefits from the government due to the absence of relevant documents with them, Karnataka Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Communities Development Corporation chairperson G. Pallavi has directed tahsildars to ensure the people get necessary documents.

Speaking to the media after reviewing the schemes meant for the nomadic communities here on Thursday, Ms. Pallavi said that documents like Aadhaar card, caste certificate, etc., were crucial for the nomadic communities to avail themselves of any government benefits. Many well-deserving families could not apply for a house from the corporation due to the lack of relevant documents.

The chairperson instructed the tahsildars to identify the targeted groups and hold special camps to issue the documents.

“The corporation can provide 3,200 houses for the homeless nomadic families across the State. But, there has been no demand from several places due to the lack of proper documentation. The nomadic communities need awareness on the schemes, and the officers should help them get the benefits they deserve,” said Ms. Pallavi.

As the chairperson of the corporation, Ms. Pallavi said she had travelled to 21 districts and visited places where nomadic communities stayed and interacted with the people at their tents, huts and hamlets. There were around 11 lakh nomadic people belonging to the SC/ST nomadic communities. In Shivamogga district alone, 20,084 nomadic people belonged to the SC and 2,728 ST people live.

The State government has earmarked ₹100 crore for the development of the nomadic people in the Budget for the year 2026-27. The amount would be utilised to establish residential schools for the children of the communities. The corporation had been making efforts to provide housing facilities for the people of Sudagadu Sidda, Handijogi, Gosangi, Shillekyata, Koracha and such other communities staying at Gondi Chatnahalli, Kallapur, Malligenahalli near Shivamogga, the chairperson said.

Housing facilities have been sanctioned for Dombaru, Sudagadu Sidda in Tirthaahlli through the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Corporation. The beneficiaries would get the title deeds soon, Ms. Pallavi said.

She also directed the officers of the Social Welfare Department to prepare a list of homeless nomadic families and submit it to the corporation.

Deputy Commissioner Prabhulinga Kavalikatti, Additional Superintendent of Police S. Ramesh Kumar, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department D. Malleshappa, and others were present at the meeting.
