A confrontation erupted at Government Polytechnic College, Thottada, on Wednesday (March 25, 2026) after Students Federation of India (SFI) activists reportedly blocked United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate in the Kannur Assembly constituency T.O. Mohanan during a campaign visit, leading to scuffle and heated verbal exchanges. Mr. Mohanan, who arrived on the campus around noon, faced strong resistance from SFI workers who raised protest slogans and displayed posters against the Congress alleging misuse of funds including those collected for the construction of houses for Wayanad landslide victims. The candidate and his supporters reportedly entered classrooms with the Principal’s permission, triggering further opposition from student activists. Tensions escalated when both sides engaged in a war of words, with UDF workers challenging the protesters. Pushing and jostling were reported amid loud sloganeering. UDF leaders later alleged that SFI activists had attempted to assault Mr. Mohanan and disrupt his campaign. They said a complaint would be lodged against those responsible for the incident. District Congress Committee president Martin George condemned the episode, accusing the SFI of attempting to derail the campaign through intimidation. The situation was brought under control though political tensions remain high in the constituency.
