The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is in the process of handing over to the State Highways the 30 km-long stretch of the NH716A from Janapanchathram to Uthukottai in Tiruvallur district. It has proposed to de-entrust/de-notify the road and hand it over to the State Highways. State Highway 51, as it was known then, was declared as a National Highway in 2022. Official sources in the NHAI said that they had written to the NHAI headquarters seeking its permission to de-entrust the road. “We are awaiting their concurrence. The de-notifying has become necessary since this road runs parallel to the NH716B, the greenfield Chittoor – Thatchur Highway, which is currently under progress. Once that road is completed and opened to traffic, most of the commercial traffic on the NH716A is expected to move to the new road.
