Police check AIADMK MLA’s office: advocates urge poll officials to be impartial

Appealing to the poll officials to strictly adhere to the guidelines laid out by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the advocates wing of the AIADMK charged that in just about a few days since the model code of conduct came into force, the officials had checked the office of their MLA R.B. Udayakumar in his constituency.

Speaking to media persons, the advocates, including Tamilselvan and others, said on Sunday that the police, accompanied by the flying squad team comprising revenue department and videographers came to the ‘Amma Kovil’ (where Mr. Udayakumar’s office functioned) and checked at random.

The AIADMK members said that they did not object to the check and maintained that they welcomed and cooperated with the officials, but raised eyebrows only over the manner in which the poll officials surfaced into their premises alone.

“We have a strong suspicion that some of the senior IAS and IPS officers and others in Madurai district were partial with the DMK functionaries…” they said.

The manner in which the police came almost thrice in the last five days gave an impression that they ‘targeted’ the opponents. The fear among the DMK and their allies clearly showed that they were disturbed and these were early signs of losing the election, they said.

The AIADMK would submit a detailed memorandum to the ECI on Monday in this regard and urged the officials in Madurai district to be impartial.

The officials came on Sunday and the police checked the rooms at the ‘Amma Kovil’ and also inquired about the party functionaries.

After about 45 minutes of the inquiry, they left the premises, the advocates said.

For a short period there was some uneasy moments as the police officials objected to the videographing and said that they were discharging their duties as per the ECI guidelines. After senior leaders, including Mr. Udayakumar arrived, the officials conducted the check and left the premises, they added.
