The mortal remains of senior Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader and former Minister V.K. Ebrahim Kunju were interred at the Alangad Juma Masjid graveyard near Aluva here with full State honours on Wednesday.

A large number of people from different walks of life attended the funeral.

A four-time Member of the Kerala Legislative Assembly, Mr. Kunju died at a private hospital here on Tuesday after battling cancer. He was 73.

He had represented Kalamassery constituency in Ernakulam from 2011 to 2021. He was the MLA of the then Mattancherry constituency from 2001 to 2011. He was the Minister for Public Works in the United Democratic Front government from 2011-2016. He had also served as Minister for Industries in the period 2005-2006.

The body was kept at his residence in Aluva for public homage till 9 a.m in the morning. Several persons paid last respects to the departed leader at his residence and later at the Alangad Juma Masjid.

IUML State president Panakkad Syed Sadikali Shihab Thangal, party national general secretary P.K. Kunhalikutty, P. Rajeeve, Minister for Industries, Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president Sunny Joseph, MPs Hibi Eden, P.V. Abdul Wahab, Jebi Mather, Haris Beeran, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader E. P Jayarajan were among those who paid their last respects.

Several workers of the UDF from nearby districts had also turned up to pay homage to the late leader, who had played a key role in expanding the IUML’s base in central Kerala.
