Shops at Tiruvarur remained closed on Tuesday following a bandh call given by Tiruvarur-Vijayapuram Varthagar Sangam condemning the proposal to operate Kamban Express through the newly laid Karaikal-Thirunallar-Mayiladuthurai broad gauge section. The traders’ association and rail commuters associations in Tiruvarur had raised objections when Southern Railway announced its decision to operate the Karaikal-Chennai Egmore Kamban Express service through Thirunallar, instead of Tiruvarur, a few months ago. They had also conducted demonstrations at Tiruvarur insisting that the service should be operated via Tiruvarur .
