Senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader E. P Jayarajan on Monday said that a few members leaving the party fold to pursue their personal aspirations and to secure certain positions was not something new as it has happened on earlier occasions too. He was addressing the media ahead of inaugurating the election convention of K. J Maxy, the Left Democratic Front’s candidate in Kochi Assembly constituency. He was responding to queries on the decision of party leaders including G. Sudhakaran, and T. K Govindan to leave the party. Mr. Jayarajan recalled that the late M.V. Raghavan had exited the CPI(M) after advocating an alliance with the Indian Union Muslim League to keep the Congress out of power. He later joined hands with the Congress and the Muslim League. But his exit never affected the prospects of the CPI(M), he said. He rejected the allegations by the Indian National Congress of a tacit understanding between the CPI(M) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in some of the seats to defeat the United Democratic Front. Instead, he alleged that the Congress had weakened the anti-BJP political forces and alliances. In the Delhi Assembly elections, it put up candidates against the Aam Aadmi Party despite realising that it had no sway over the electorate. The Congress took a similar position in Bihar too, he alleged.
