District Collector R. Sukumar paid surprise visit to a few check-posts created on Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai outskirts on Tuesday night to monitor the vehicle checks being conducted by designated officials with police escort as part of the upcoming Assembly elections.

Since nine flying squads and as many static squads have been deployed in each Assembly segment ahead of the election to check the vehicles round the clock for illegal movement of cash, gifts, liquor etc., Dr. Sukumar visited on Tuesday night some of the check posts on the outskirts of Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai where the static squads have been posted.

As he visited the check post at KTC Nagar on Palayamkottai – Thoothukudi four-lane national highway late in the night, Dr. Sukumar was there for a while to monitor the static squad checking the vehicles coming from neighbouring Thoothukudi district. He asked the officials and the police personnel posted there to check the trunks of the vehicles without disturbing the travellers.

The Collector also inquired the drivers and a passenger of the vehicles about their purpose of visit to Tirunelveli district to understand if they were returning back home or traversing the district to reach their destinations in Kanniyakumari or Tenkasi districts or in neighbouring Kerala.

The Collector also visited the check posts at Sankar Nagar, Pettai and Tuckerammalpuram, all located on the periphery of the city.
