Although eligible citizens can apply for enrolment in the electoral roll till Monday (March 23), the final day for filing nominations for the April 9 Assembly polls in Kerala, only those individuals who had applied on or before March 15 would be able to vote this time.

Procedures related to the processing of an application and adding the name to the electoral roll take up to ten days. Therefore, only those applications filed on or before March 15 would be treated as eligible for the upcoming Assembly polls, Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Rathan U. Kelkar said on Sunday.

The issue had caused some confusion as election officials had earlier stated that names can be added to the roll till the last day of filing nominations.

Mr. Kelkar said applications received after March 15 would be processed only after the results of the elections are declared on May 4. Fresh applications also will be accepted after the results are out.

Kerala has a little over 2.7 crore voters in the electoral roll. The deadline for filing nomination papers for the Assembly polls will end at 3 p.m. on Monday. An update from Mr. Kelkar’s office said341 candidates have so far filed a total of 607sets of nomination papers.

In 2021, there were 957 candidates in the fray and a total of 2,180 nominations had been filed across the State.

Till Sunday, 1,39,799 complaints have been filed regarding Model Code of Conduct violations.
