A major disaster was narrowly averted after a lorry transporting firecrackers caught fire after coming in contact with a high-tension electricity wire at Kothur on outskirts of the city on Saturday (March 21) afternoon.

The incident occurred around 12.30 p.m. on the Penjerla–Manikyammaguda road within the limits of Kothur police station. The lorry was carrying a consignment of crackers from Sivakasi in Tamil Nadu and headed towards Maheshwaram, with part of the load also meant for Nizamabad.
