In Trilokpuri, an alleged verbal spat between two groups escalated into a scuffle, which led to the death of a 17-year-old boy and landed six teenagers in jail, the police said on Tuesday.

The police registered an FIR under Sections 103(1)(murder), 115(2)(voluntarily causing hurt), 126(2)(wrongful restraint), 3(5)(common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

“Based on the investigation conducted, all six Children in Conflict with Law involved in the incident have been apprehended. The post-mortem examination and the final opinion regarding the exact cause of death are awaited. Further investigation is in progress,” the police said.

The incident happened on Monday evening when Mohit Singh, a resident of Indra Camp, was hanging out with his friends, a group of teenagers picked up a verbal fight with him, which eventually turned into a fist fight, during which the 17-year-old received blows and kicks and fell unconscious, according to a eyewitness’ statement the police collected during the investigation.

An ongoing dispute between the accused group and the victim led to the flare-up, the statement added.

“The eyewitness stated that the victim was repeatedly assaulted with fists and kicks, even after he fell to the ground. When the eyewitness attempted to intervene, he was also assaulted. As a result, the victim became unconscious,” the police said, according to an eyewitness account they collected.

Mohit was initially taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital and later referred to GTB Hospital for further treatment, where he was declared unfit to state the incident.

The police were informed on Tuesday around 1.15 a.m. that Mohit had succumbed to his injuries.
