“Young women should themselves recognise their potential, develop leadership qualities and play an important role in building tomorrow’s society,” entrepreneur and social activist Asha Patil said in Jamkhandi on Tuesday.

She urged young girls to emerge as entrepreneurs and create employment opportunities.

“Women need to come forward equally in every walk of life. Education, self-confidence and economic self-reliance are the main pillars of women’s empowerment,” she said.

She was speaking after inaugurating Sinchana, an event to mark International Women’s Day in BLDEA’s Commerce, BHS Arts and TGP Science College.

It was organised in collaboration with the women’s Unit and Entrepreneurship Development Committee and the IQAC Cell.

Ms. Patil shared her experiences of promoting women engaged in creating Banjara art.

She said that the traditional art forms of the Banjara community are a testament to the diverse culture of the country and it was the responsibility of all to preserve such art and introduce it to the next generation.

She had tried to preserve the heritage of the community through exhibitions and sales in various places, including Delhi and Bengaluru. She also said that fashion design students from various places had come to Vijayapura to study Banjara art and conduct research.
