Rising attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh deeply worrying: Assam CM

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the rising attacks on minority Hindus in Bangladesh were a matter of deep concern and called for extending moral support to the community in the neighbouring country.

“What is happening in Bangladesh is deeply worrying for us. As the incidents of attacks on the Hindus may have their effects in Assam, we will have to remain cautious and monitor the situation,” he told journalists on Tuesday (January 6, 2026).

He said the worsening situation in Bangladesh and evidence of growing jihadist activities in Assam over the last 10 years pointed to a security threat unless the geopolitical situation in the neighbourhood improves.

Protests in Paris

Concerns over the attacks on minorities in Muslim-majority Bangladesh were also raised in Paris. Members of a Hindu-Buddhist-Christian forum staged a protest demonstration at the Republic Square in the capital of France, demanding exemplary punishment for those who killed Dipu Chandra Das on false blasphemy charges.

Members of the Paris unit of Bangladesh Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council and the Bureau of Human Rights and Justice (BHRJ) also condemned the murders of Khokon Das and Amrito Mandal, while demanding the unconditional release of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishnadas Prabhu.

The protestors said that Dhaka, after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, has been pursuing the agenda of making the country Hindu-free.

“At least 187 Hindus have been killed in the last year, 221 Hindu women raped, while thousands of Hindu homes and businesses have been attacked, vandalised, and torched. At least 169 Hindu teachers of schools, colleges, and universities have been forced to resign or dismissed from service,” the BHRJ said in a statement on Tuesday (January 6).

Demanding an end to all forms of atrocities on Hindus and other minorities in Bangladesh, BHRJ president Dipan Mitra said that targeting Hindus by accusing them of blasphemy and occupying Hindu monasteries and temples has become routine in Bangladesh.
