About six lakh workers employed at the hosiery units (domestic and exporting factories) in Tiruppur district will get higher wages from March 17 as six industrial associations and nine trade unions signed a four-year agreement for revised wages. According to the agreeement signed on Tuesday, after negotiations for almost five months, the workers employed in seven jobs, including tailoring, checking and packing will get 33% hike in wages in four years. Their wages will increase 18% in the first year and 5% every year for the next three years. The DA will be ₹2,500 for 20,000 points and 15.5 paisa for every point after that. The revised wages will apply for workers employed under both, time rate and piece rate. On an average, a tailor will get ₹80 a day more wages, said the trade union leaders.
