Police Commissioner S.D. Sharanappa has said that science and technology, through new innovations, should help improve the mindset of people and make everyday life better for the common man.

Speaking after inaugurating the 42nd anniversary celebrations of the District Science Centre in Kalaburagi on Tuesday, he said that the Science Centre provides an excellent platform for students to develop scientific awareness alongside formal education.

He urged students to visit the centre during holidays along with their parents, siblings and friends to learn more about science and technology.

“We have advanced to a stage where we must also understand emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence. Scientific temper and curiosity are essential for shaping a progressive society,” he said.

Delivering a special lecture, Head of the Computer Science Department at PDA Engineering College Sujatha Teradal explained how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can simplify future life and also highlighted the challenges associated with its excessive use.

She said that AI has wide applications in healthcare, weather forecasting, policing, automobiles, defence services, traffic management and other fast-evolving scientific fields.

“However, overdependence on AI can lead to erosion of basic human knowledge and critical thinking. AI should be used judiciously and within limits, as excessive reliance may eventually lead to misuse,” she added.

District Science Centre officer K.M. Sunil spoke about the importance of the Science Centre in nurturing scientific curiosity among students.

He told the gathering about the various monthly programmes, science demonstrations and experimental activities conducted at the centre to promote hands-on learning.

The former District Science Officer Lakshmi Lakshminarayana and a large number of school students were present.
