The Andhra Pradesh government has approved a rollout of an ‘Enhanced Energy Efficient Smart Street Lighting System’ across all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the State, aiming to reduce energy consumption, cut municipal electricity costs, and promote environmentally sustainable urban infrastructure. The initiative will replace the conventional streetlighting with intelligent LED systems integrated with Internet of Things(IoT)–based Lighting Management Systems (ILMS), informed S. Suresh Kumar, Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, in a statement on Tuesday. The smart network will enable real-time monitoring, centralised control, automated fault detection and predictive maintenance, improving reliability of public lighting while significantly lowering power usage. For implementation, the government will sign an agreement with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL), which will deploy the smart lighting infrastructure in municipalities. The project will operate under a performance-based model at a competitive rate of ₹175 per light per month, including GST. Technical oversight and monitoring will be handled by Andhra Pradesh State Energy Efficiency Development Corporation Limited, which has been designated as the Project Monitoring Unit. The agency will support the preparation of detailed project reports, bidding processes, monitoring, and greenhouse gas emission assessments. Mr. Suresh Kumar said the initiative represents a major technological transformation in urban service delivery. He said that streetlighting accounts for a large share of municipal energy expenditure and that the smart system will reduce costs while improving efficiency, safety and environmental performance in cities.
