The Kozhikode Corporation Council has decided to float a fresh tender for the operation and maintenance of sewage treatment plants (STPs) at the Government Medical College, constructed under the AMRUT scheme. A meeting of the council held recently decided to entrust the operation of the plants to the existing contractor until a new company is appointed. As the Model Code of Conduct is in force due to the Assembly elections, the council meeting, chaired by Mayor O. Sadasivan, decided to seek the Election Commission’s approval based on the District Collector’s recommendation. While Congress councillor K.C. Shobhita opposed the decision, other UDF members, along with BJP councillors, supported the ruling front’s stance. When tenders were invited for the operation of the STPs, three companies participated. Of these, the first company failed to submit the required documents. It was also found that the second company had links with the existing contractor. Following this, it was decided to re-tender the contract.
