The Tamil Nadu Anganwadi Workers and Helpers Association staged a protest in Krishnagiri demanding pensions, wage hike, equal pay for equal work among a raft of demands on Tuesday (January 6, 2026). The association demanded the recognition of anganwadi workers as government employees. They also called for retirement benefits of ₹10 lakh to anganwadi workers and ₹5 lakh to the assistants. A family pension of ₹9,000 was also sought after. Other demands include, one month annual vacation in May, an increment for promotion from mini anganwadi centres to main centres and filling all anganwadi vacancies. The association also called for promotion to persons with ten-year experience and 5 year experience in mini anganwadis, as the case may be, even with SSLC qualification. The new government order of a Class XII educational qualification must not be implemented for experienced workers, the protesters added. The Association called for a halt to direct recruitments in promotions, and instead provide cent percent promotion to those who joined anganwadi service in 1993. They also demanded that anganwadi workers be relieved from the duties of BLOs (Booth Level Officers).
