A 40-year-old habitual offender was sentenced to life imprisonment by a sessions court in a murder case investigated by Shamirpet police. The court imposed a fine of ₹1,000 on the accused. The accused was identified as Magani Ramulu. The case dates back to March 16, 2019, when police found the highly decomposed body of an unidentified woman at the Outer Ring Road plantation near Upparpally Circle. Initially, Shamirpet police registered a case under Section 174 – suspicious death of the Criminal Procedure Code – and took up investigation. Subsequent inquiries led to the identification of the deceased as Pallapu Lavanya alias Manjula, 35. Investigators later established that the accused attempted to sexually assault the woman and, when she resisted, murdered her by striking her with a boulder. He also stole her mobile phone after committing the crime. Following these findings, the case was altered to include charges of murder and theft. Ramulu was arrested on February 12, 2021, and a charge sheet was filed after completion of the investigation. Following trial, the II Additional District and Sessions Judge of Medchal Malkajgiri District G. Bhanumathi held the accused guilty and awarded life imprisonment. Police said the accused is a habitual offender who was earlier convicted in a murder case registered at Narsingi police station in 2009. He was released from prison in November 2018, barely months before the crime for which he has now been convicted.
