The Kerala Higher Education department has granted approval to commence two new-generation courses each in all government and aided arts and science colleges in the State from the 2026-27 academic year. The new courses will be introduced in each of the State’s 69 government colleges and 191 aided colleges. In total, around 520 new undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are expected to be introduced in the higher education sector. The government clarified that the programmes will be launched subject to approval from the respective universities. No permanent faculty appointments will be made during the first five years of the programmes. The universities have thus far completed statutory scrutiny and recommended 60 new programmes in 35 colleges, for which the government has granted administrative sanction to begin classes in the 2026–27 academic year. The remaining colleges will also be able to start two programmes each once university approvals are obtained. Colleges that have already received approval for one programme will be permitted to introduce one additional course. Official sources pointed out that the move is likely to facilitate greater flexibility through major and minor subject options for four-year undergraduate programmes in the State. The new courses will include emerging and skill-oriented fields such as Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, psychology, computer science, logistics, FinTech and data science.
