CPI(M) politburo member K. Balakrishnan on Tuesday questioned the moral authority of Union Home Minister Amit Shah to speak on corruption after a huge scam of spurious medicines surfaced under the AINRC-BJP rule in Puducherry. Talking to reporters after participating in a protest organised by CPI(M) against the ruling AINRC-BJP combine on the counterfeit drug issue, Mr. Balakrishnan said the illegal drug manufacturing was a huge scam involving politicians and officials in Puducherry. The investigating agencies in Puducherry have arrested only one official so far in the case. Illegal manufacturing of drugs in such magnitude could not happen without political support. Chief Minister N. Rangasamy who handles the Health portfolio cannot absolve himself of the responsibility from the subject, he said. “It is a huge scam that has come to light in Puducherry. Medicines worth crores have been manufactured illegally and sold across the country during the tenure of the AINRC-BJP government. After the case surfaced, the Home Minister, during his recent visit to Tamil Nadu, spoke about corruption in the DMK government. Mr. Shah has no moral authority to speak about corruption,” he said. Mr. Balakrishnan participated in the protest along with party secretary S. Ramachandran, CPI(M) veterans T. Murugan and V. Perumal.
