The State government has issued an order transferring a 10.3-km stretch of road from the Rural Development Department to the Highways Department for widening and upgrading the proposed third alternative route to Yercaud. The road forms part of a proposed route connecting Kanavaipudur, Kannapadi and Nagalur to facilitate access to the hill station. A release from Collector R. Brindha Devi said that Yercaud, an important tourist destination in the district, is currently accessible through two routes — the Salem–Yercaud main road and the Kuppanur–Yercaud road. The new route is expected to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity to the hill station.
