In the epic Mahabharata, three things are considered the most important: the Bhagavad Gita, Vidhura Neethi, and Bhishma Upadesa. Of them, Vidura Neethi is very easy to understand and follow, even for ordinary people.

Vidura Neethi, the advice given by Vidura to King Dhritarashtra, contains essential guidelines for righteous living and wise conduct relevant to all people. In one of his discourses, Dr. Venkatesh explained, drawing on Vidura Neethi, some qualities and traits of a truly intelligent person.

An intelligent person understands himself well and takes initiative in performing his duties. Whatever difficulties or disturbances arise, he does not lose patience and remains steadfast. He never deviates from the path of dharma. It is said that Vibhishana prayed to Brahma, the creator, seeking the boon that he should never transgress from the path of dharma at any time. An intelligent person carefully reflects before undertaking any action, and once a decision is made, he does not withdraw from it. He readily grasps the nuances of the work he proposes to undertake. Such a person allows others to speak and listens to them attentively.

He would not undertake any work merely because his mind longs for it. Instead, he would carefully analyse the matter and take a decision only after thorough consideration. He would not offer unsolicited advice to anyone. He would neither brood over what is lost nor grieve excessively for it. He would grasp things quickly and clearly. He would not desire things that are beyond his reach.

He would remain firm and steadfast even in the face of adversity. Praise would not make him elated, nor would insults make him dejected. Such a person would always show respect and reverence to elders.
