A 23-year-old house surgeon allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room at the Government Medical College in Siddipet after she was allegedly cheated by a fellow doctor under the pretext of a relationship.

The deceased was identified as B. Lavanya, a native of Jogulamba-Gadwal district. According to Siddipet police, Lavanya had completed her MBBS and was working as an intern at the Medical College. During her internship, she came in contact with Pranay Teja, a resident doctor from Alwal, in July 2025. Pranay had completed his postgraduation and was working at the same institute.

Police said the two became close. However, after some time, Pranay stopped responding to Lavanya’s calls and messages and refused to marry her allegedly because she was from a Dalit background.

Distressed over the alleged cheating, Lavanya ended her life . She was rushed by fellow house surgeons to a hospital for treatment. However, she succumbed in the early hours of Sunday.

Based on a complaint, Siddipet Town-III police registered a case under relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Pranay Teja was arrested on January 5 and remanded to judicial custody.
