Pope Francis’ open casket has been laid in the Casa Santa Marta residence at the Vatican as mourning rites continue following his death. The coffin will be transferred from the papal residence to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday, where he will lie in state before his funeral, according to the Vatican. In a break from tradition, Pope Francis said in his final testament that he wished to be buried in a “simple” tomb in the ground at Rome’s Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, not St. Peter’s Basilica.
