Farmers in and around Mannargudi in Tiruvarur district have opposed the ‘hurried’ scheduling of a public hearing on letting out treated water into Pamani river from a sewage treatment plant to be set up as part of the ongoing underground sewage network project in Mannargudi Municipality. Inquiries reveal that the municipality made arrangements at its headquarters to hear the views of the public about the proposal. The sewage treatment plant is to come up at R .P. Sivam Nagar under the ₹165.50 crore project that is being implemented under the Centre’s Swatchh Bharat Mission with external funding by KfW Development Bank, a German state-owned financial institution.
