Intensive cleaning works were carried out at 1,373 bus shelters across all 15 zones of the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) on Monday.

The operation covered bus shelters located in Zones I to XV and was conducted simultaneously across the city during the two-hour period. The activity formed part of regular sanitation works undertaken at public places such as bus shelters, roads, bridges, burial grounds and parks.

According to a press release, the GCC removes an average of 6,300 metric tonnes of municipal solid waste every day. The release added that around 1,000 metric tonnes of construction and demolition waste is also cleared on a daily basis.

The intensive cleaning at bus shelters included removal of encroachments and posters, clearing of shrubs, garbage and other solid waste around the shelters.

The work was being monitored by designated officers appointed for this purpose. The cleaning operations were carried out under their supervision.

The release stated that the intensive sanitation drive at bus shelters was conducted on January 5, 2026, during the morning hours, as part of ongoing solid waste management activities within the city limits.
