The Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) has announced a “student referendum” on the removal of Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Panditover her alleged casteist remarks during a podcast interview last month. The referendum will be conducted on Tuesday across all schools of the university. The V-C had allegedly said that one cannot progress by “playing the victim card”, while referring to Dalits in India and African-American communities in the United States. The remarks drew strong criticism from students and academics, who described them as “insensitive and casteist”.
