None was injured in the accident. It is suspected that garbage, including dry leaves, caught the sparks which spread to the boats near the southern groyne of the harbour. “We received an alert around 8.30 p.m. that dry grass in the area had caught fire. Firefighters from Aroor, Club Road and Gandhi Nagar fire stations extinguished the flames in an operation that lasted over two hours,” an officer with the Mattancherry fire station said. A personnel with the Kannamaly police station said only parts of a few boats were damaged in the fire.
