Congress expresses ‘grave concern’ over ‘unilateral U.S. actions’ in Venezuela

The Congress on Monday (January 5, 2026) expressed “grave concern” over what it described as unilateral actions taken by the United States in Venezuela over the past 48 hours, which “violated established principles of international law”, the party said.

In a statement, Salman Khurshid, chairperson of the Congress’s Foreign Affairs Department, said such actions transgressed norms enshrined in the United Nations Charter and various international treaties.

“Respect for national sovereignty and peaceful coexistence have formed the bedrock of the post World War II rules-based world order,” the statement said.

“Any kinetic action that circumscribe these without the express sanction of the United Nations risk the resurgence of primordial rules of statecraft and undermine global stability,” it added.

The party said the will of the Venezuelan people must be given primacy, and stressed that the country’s natural resources should be utilised for the benefit of its citizens, in keeping with the principle of permanent sovereignty over natural resources.
