Amid allegations by the Opposition that the State government was allotting flats to illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Kogilu Layout, the government has decided to ask the residents who lost their homes in the demolition drive to prove their nativity and that they have been residing in Bengaluru for at least five years to become eligible for allotment of flats. Sources said that preference would be given to those from the State. Minister for Revenue Krishna Byre Gowda and Minister for Housing B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan held a joint review meeting on Monday and instructed officials to clear the applications of those whose documents are in order and allot them flats, in phases. “The residents need to prove their nativity. If they tell their native villages, we will get the police and village accountants in those villages to verify the same. The Housing Department rules say that a person should have resided in Bengaluru for at least five years to become eligible for a house to be allotted. They should also have an income certificate. These documents will also be checked. We will allot houses to those who clear verification, in batches,” said Mr. Gowda. He also added that there were a few nomadic fakirs, who do not have income certificates, which would be verified and provided. “There will be no interference in the vetting process and only those who pass the test will be allotted flats, not others,” he said.
