The Congress party on Thursday (March 5, 2026) fielded Anurag Sharma as its candidate for the lone seat of Rajya Sabha from Himachal Pradesh.

Mr. Sharma filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections scheduled to be held on March 16. Currently president of Kangra District Congress Committee, Mr. Sharma is considered close to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

The candidacy of Mr. Sharma, who hails from Kangra district, is being seen as a balancing act by the party for regional representation. From Kangra district, where the Congress has won 10 seats out of 15 in the 2022 Assembly election and only two legislator has made it to the Cabinet.

The Kangra district, which has the maximum number of Assembly seats (15), is often regarded as the most politically significant district in Himachal Pradesh.
