A 30-year-old migrant worker from Odisha was arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) near Jolarpet railway station in Tirupattur on Thursday for assaulting a Ticket Traveller Examiner (TTE) in Dhanbad–Alappuzha (Bokaro) Express for asking reservation ticket.

The traveller was identified as Rajarahuvar Yadav, a native of Odisha. Initial inquiry revealed that the victim and TTE S. Jothi Lingam, 49, a resident of Perambur in Chennai, was assigned as a ticket examiner between Chennai and Salem in the express train.

Police said that as he was checking the tickets of commuters in coach four, which is a reserved compartment, in the train. Jothi Lingam asked for the ticket from Yadav, who was lying in the upper berth in the coach. Police said Yadav was in an inebriated condition and refused to show his ticket, which was eligible to travel only in an unreserved compartment in the train. A heated argument broke out between them. In a fit of rage, Yadav attacked Lingam, leaving him badly injured.

Immediately, other commuters rescued the injured TTE and halted the train. Based on the alert, a team of GRP personnel from Jolarpet railway station rushed to the spot. Lingam was admitted at Government Taluk Hospital in Tirupattur town, where doctors said he is stable. Yadav was lodged at the sub jail in Tirupattur town. A case was registered and a probe is underway.
