The doctors and faculty members of Department of Community Medicine at Government Medical College organised various activities, including songs and dance performances, to educate the public on healthy food habits on the occasion of World Obesity Day at Prakasam Bhavan in Ongole on Wednesday.

A public rally was organised at Gandhi Road to spread awareness about obesity and its health consequences. A street play was performed to communicate the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, while health education sessions were conducted for the general public.

Free screening for Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference measurement was conducted at the railway station. A health awareness skit was performed highlighting the dangers of obesity and practical preventive measures. Street play, health talk, and dance performances were conducted to emphasise the importance of lifestyle modification in preventing obesity.

The team emphasised that obesity is a major risk factor for serious health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, stroke, coronary artery disease (CAD), and other non-communicable diseases. The doctors suggested preventive measures like 30-minute brisk walk daily, stress-free lifestyle, avoiding junk food and high-sugar foods, and following a healthy sleep pattern.

The Department also promoted the Wellness Clinic at Room no. 222 in Government General Hospital, where preventive and curative services for lifestyle diseases are available. The local people were asked to utilise the services for regular screening, counselling, and management of obesity and related conditions.
