The incident came to light after a video of the assault was circulated on social media, leading to police action. The victim Unnamalai, 70, wife of late Urumasettty, was residing in Attupalan Kottai near Thevarmukkulam in Kaveripattinam. She was living with her two married sons. The family had a long-festering land dispute with Urumasetty’s brother Balakrishnan’s kin over an adjoining land parcel. On Sunday (January 4, 2026), Balakrishnan’s son Kumar, 53, his wife Kalpana, 45, and a few other relatives unilaterally began clearing up the disputed land and ploughing it. Unnamalai, who was home alone at the time, had objected to this, stating that the issue was under litigation. It was then that Kumar and Kalpana grabbed Unnamalai, tied her to a tree, and started slapping her, purported visuals of the incident show. Unnamalai’s relative, a local BJP functionary, who had tried to intervene, was also assaulted. The accused later untied her. Based on the video evidence, Unnamalai and her family lodged a police complaint. Kumar, Kalpana, their relative and third accused Prabhakaran were arrested.
